Medical devices - from infusion pumps and patient monitors to surgical consoles and diagnostic equipment - require keypads that survive repeated disinfection, deliver reliable feedback to gloved hands, and meet FDA and ISO 13485 quality standards. In recent years, a growing number of OEMs are replacing traditional membrane switches with metal dome switches. This guide examines why.
The Challenge of Medical Keypad Design
Hospital-grade keypads operate under conditions no consumer product can match. Between patients, nurses wipe them down with CaviCide, bleach wipes or 70% isopropyl alcohol - up to 20 times per 12-hour shift. The keypad must not delaminate, yellow, or lose tactile feel after 10,000+ disinfection cycles. The operator may be wearing latex or nitrile gloves, which reduces finger sensitivity and makes ambiguous feedback unacceptable.
These constraints expose a fundamental weakness of membrane switches: the polyester overlay that seals the keypad is also the surface that chemicals attack. Over months of disinfection, the overlay becomes sticky, the printed legends wear off, and the tactile feedback degrades as the dome underneath fatigues.
Metal Domes in Medical Devices: Three Advantages
1. Superior Chemical Resistance
A medical-grade stainless steel dome (SUS304 or SUS316L) is impervious to alcohol, bleach and disinfectant wipes. When integrated with a silicone key top - which is inherently cleanable and autoclave-compatible - the assembly survives 50,000+ disinfection cycles without degradation. Shanyo's medical button dome arrays are validated against ISO 10993-5 biocompatibility standards.
2. Gloved-Operation Tactile Feedback
A gloved finger has 30–50% less tactile sensitivity than a bare finger. A membrane switch with 15% tactile ratio feels like a rubber button to a gloved user. A metal dome with 50–60% tactile ratio produces a distinct click that cuts through the glove layer - critical for medication-delivery devices where an unconfirmed press can mean a wrong dose.
3. Longer Service Life
Hospital equipment cycles through 5–7 year service intervals. A standard membrane switch rated for 500,000 presses will fail within 2–3 years of intensive use. A gold-plated medical dome rated for 1 million+ cycles maintains consistent actuation force throughout the device's lifecycle, reducing service calls and warranty costs.
When Membrane Switches Still Win
Metal domes are not universally superior. Membrane switches remain the better choice when:
- Waterproofing without a separate overlay is needed. A membrane switch seals the PCB in one shot; a dome-based keypad requires a gasket or silicone overmold to achieve IP67.
- The product is disposable. A single-use medical device does not need a 5-million-cycle dome. A cheap carbon pill on a medical equipment PCB suffices.
- Custom graphics dominate. A membrane overlay can display complex legends, colors and backlighting in a single printed layer. A silicone-over-dome assembly requires separate legends or laser etching.
