What Is a Metal Dome?
A metal dome — also known as a snap dome, tactile dome, or metal dome switch — is a thin, precision-stamped metal disc made typically of stainless steel (SUS301/SUS304). When pressed, the dome's center collapses with a characteristic "click", momentarily bridging two contacts on a PCB or flexible printed circuit to close the circuit. When released, the dome's stored elastic energy snaps it back to its original shape, breaking the contact.

A metal dome sits beneath a membrane keypad or graphic overlay and gives a tactile snap when pressed, closing the circuit beneath it. It is the core actuating element in remote controls, medical devices, automotive switches and consumer electronics.
