What Is a Flexible Printed Circuit(FPC)?

 

A flexible printed circuit — also known as an FPC, flex circuit, or flexible PCB — is a thin, bendable circuit board that uses etched copper traces laminated onto a flexible polyimide or PET substrate. Instead of rigid wiring that occupies fixed space, an FPC can be bent, folded and routed into tight enclosures, moving hinges and curved surfaces — dramatically reducing assembly size, weight and connection points while maintaining reliable electrical signal transmission.

Types of FPC
 
Keys FPC

Single-sided flexible board
This kind of flexible PCB enjoys the lowest price, while the electrical performance PCB is low. It will be the best choice should when engineers place wires on one side. With the help of chemical etching, the conductive pattern on the flexible insulating base is rolled copper foil. Insulating base material may be polyimide, PET, aramid fibers and PVC.

 

Double-sided flexible board
Double-sided one is the chemical-etched conductive pattern on both sides of insulating base. Metalized holes achieve the electronic connects between on insulating layers to meet the design of flexibility and function. The cover film can protect the tracks and indicate the locations of components.

 

Multilayer flexible board
Multilayer flexible board is laminated by more than 3 layers of single or double-sided flexible circuits together, which form a conductive path between different layers with metalized drilling hole. Multilayer circuit has greater reliability, better thermal conductivity and more convenient assembly performance. The assembly dimension, layers and flexibility should be taken into consideration when designing.

Q: When to use flex pcb?

A: Flexible circuits are ideal for medical devices, implants, sensors, and mobile consumer electronics because they fit where space and/or weight is limited. Flexible circuitry is the preferred and recommended solution for products that require: Wiring solutions that fit where rigid boards cannot.

Q:  What is the difference between flexible and rigid-flex PCB?

A:  Rigid, flex rigid, and flex PCBs are made with different types of conductive materials. Rigid PCBs, for example, are made from inflexible electro-deposited copper. Flexible PCBs, on the other hand, are often made from bendable annealed copper.

Q: What is the shelf life of flex PCB?

A: Under optimal conditions (controlled temperature and humidity, proper packaging), high-quality polyimide-based Flex PCBs can typically be stored for 2-5 years without significant degradation. However, PCBs with certain surface finishes (like OSP) may have a much shorter shelf life, potentially as short as 3-6 months.

Q:  Where is flexible PCB used?

A: The most common application of flexible PCBs is in electronic devices for consumers, in which the shape and size require the circuit to conform to the device's shape while keeping the size as small as possible.
