What Is a Flexible Printed Circuit(FPC)?
A flexible printed circuit — also known as an FPC, flex circuit, or flexible PCB — is a thin, bendable circuit board that uses etched copper traces laminated onto a flexible polyimide or PET substrate. Instead of rigid wiring that occupies fixed space, an FPC can be bent, folded and routed into tight enclosures, moving hinges and curved surfaces — dramatically reducing assembly size, weight and connection points while maintaining reliable electrical signal transmission.

Types of FPC

Single-sided flexible board
This kind of flexible PCB enjoys the lowest price, while the electrical performance PCB is low. It will be the best choice should when engineers place wires on one side. With the help of chemical etching, the conductive pattern on the flexible insulating base is rolled copper foil. Insulating base material may be polyimide, PET, aramid fibers and PVC.
Double-sided flexible board
Double-sided one is the chemical-etched conductive pattern on both sides of insulating base. Metalized holes achieve the electronic connects between on insulating layers to meet the design of flexibility and function. The cover film can protect the tracks and indicate the locations of components.
Multilayer flexible board
Multilayer flexible board is laminated by more than 3 layers of single or double-sided flexible circuits together, which form a conductive path between different layers with metalized drilling hole. Multilayer circuit has greater reliability, better thermal conductivity and more convenient assembly performance. The assembly dimension, layers and flexibility should be taken into consideration when designing.
Benefits of FPC
Efficient use of space
Flexible PCBs are thinner, easily cut into complex shapes, and can be bent to fit the shape of the device they are placed inside. Also, especially in rigid-flex circuits, components can be placed in different orientations and still connect.


Resistance to shock and vibration
The lower stiffness and mass result in less energy entering and transmitting through an electronic assembly using flexible PCBs. Also, the material can survive significant levels of strain caused by shock and vibration.
Robust in harsh environments
The polymer material used in flex designs is resistant to harsh chemicals. It can also withstand high temperatures and has better heat dissipation capabilities than rigid PCBs.


Simplified assembly
When replacing traditional wiring or wire harnesses, flexible PCBs can greatly reduce assembly costs. They also don’t need to be held down with screws or clamps and can be glued in place or left to float inside an enclosure.
Improved durability
When designed properly, flex circuits can withstand a high number of flexing cycles without failing the conducting circuitry.


Less mass
In applications where every gram counts, flexible PCBs provide electronic circuits with less mass than rigid boards.
Smart watches: Due to their flexible build and advanced capabilities, FPCs are used in smart watches for functions like processing live health statistics collected from a sensor.
Satellite solar panels: Inside satellites deployed to outer space, FPCs are used to connect the solar panels to the satellite's power management system. Light in weight, it helps to avoid excess fuel usage caused by additional weight.
