Product Overview: Medical Button Dome Sheet Array
Medical device keypads have to work every day for years, survive hospital-grade disinfection, and carry documentation that supports the device's regulatory file. Shanyo designs and manufactures ISO 13485 certified metal dome arrays for medical keypads - infusion pumps, patient monitors, ventilators, anesthesia machines and handheld diagnostics - with the domes pre-located on a sealed flex circuit or PET overlay.
This page covers the standard medical array build, disinfection compatibility, gloved-hand force options and the documentation that ships with every lot.
What Medical Keypads Demand
- Service life: a clinical device sees millions of keystrokes over a 7-10 year life; the array is rated accordingly
- Disinfection: isopropyl alcohol, bleach and hospital cleaners must not degrade the overlay or the domes
- Gloved hands: forces above 1.6N are hard for a gloved nurse to press repeatedly; 2.0-3.5N options tune the feel
- Regulatory files: conformity certificates, dimensional records and force-curve data must be available per lot
- Biocompatibility: materials in patient-contact assemblies are tested to ISO 10993

Disinfection Compatibility
Hospital cleaning is aggressive. The standard build survives daily isopropyl alcohol wipes; for units that get bleach or Virex-based cleaning, we switch the overlay to polycarbonate and validate the legend inks against the same agents. The dome itself is stainless steel and unaffected by these chemicals - it is the overlay and the adhesive that must be specified correctly, and that is where the material selection matters.
Gloved-Hand Operation
A nurse in nitrile gloves loses fine fingertip force, and a 3N key pressed 100 times a shift causes fatigue. Medical arrays are commonly specified in two windows:
- 1.6N +/-0.3N: for keys pressed frequently with bare or light gloves
- 2.0-3.5N: for larger keys and where accidental presses must be avoided
Mixed-force arrays let you keep menu keys light and the "Stop" or "Power" keys firm in the same sheet.
Applications
- Infusion pumps: numeric and program keys with long press life
- Patient monitors: front-panel navigation clusters
- Ventilators and anesthesia machines: sealed keypads in controlled environments
- Handheld diagnostics: compact arrays with mixed forces
Where the device uses a silicone keymat over the domes, our medical silicone key line is molded and validated in the same ISO 13485 quality system, so the two layers can be qualified together.
Regulatory Documentation
Every production lot ships with:
- Certificate of conformity
- Dimensional inspection record
- Force-curve data for the lot
- Material declarations (RoHS, REACH, UL 94V-0)
- ISO 10993-5 cytotoxicity statement on standard materials
For 510(k) and CE technical files, we support your submission with design-history documentation on request - this is a standard part of medical programs, not a special service.
Quality Assurance and Testing
- Force-curve verification on every lot
- Life testing to rated cycles on first articles
- Disinfection-agent compatibility testing on overlay samples
- Dimensional and registration inspection
- ISO 13485 production controls with traceable records
Why Choose Shanyo Medical Dome Arrays
Shanyo runs medical dome arrays under an ISO 13485 quality system inside an IATF 16949 / ISO 9001 factory, so the same production discipline that serves automotive safety parts applies to your device. Standard layout MOQ is 5,000 pieces; custom button layout 20,000; first articles ship 2-3 weeks after drawing approval, including validation planning.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can the array survive bleach-based hospital cleaning?
Yes, when the overlay and inks are specified for it. The standard build is isopropyl-compatible; bleach/Virex grades use polycarbonate overlays validated against the same agents.
Q: Do you provide documentation for FDA 510(k) or CE submissions?
Yes - conformity certificates, force-curve data, dimensional records and design-history documentation are available on request.
Q: What is the lead time for first articles?
2-3 weeks after drawing approval, including validation planning; mass production follows in 3-4 weeks.
Array Construction for Medical Devices
The construction details matter as much as the dome itself in a clinical environment:
- Sealed flex construction: domes pre-located on a sealed flex circuit keep contaminants out of the contact zone
- Overlay selection: PET for standard devices, polycarbonate where the cleaning regime is harsher
- Adhesive systems: medical-grade acrylic adhesives that hold under repeated wipe-downs
- Legend durability: inks and coatings validated against the disinfectants in your IFU
- Registration: pitch held to drawing so the array mates cleanly with the keymat and housing
If you are weighing a dome array against a membrane switch for the device front panel, the comparison note metal dome vs. silicone carbon pill covers the tactile and electrical differences that drive the choice.
