Shanyo Expands Silicone Keypad-Dome Module Assembly with Laser Marking and Backlight Integration
The module line now bonds silicone keys over dome arrays with laser-marked legends, per-key backlight windows and one tested assembly.
Qingdao, China - Shanyo has expanded its silicone keypad module assembly to include laser-marked legends and integrated backlight windows, so customers order one tested module - silicone keys, dome array and FPC switch layer - instead of three components with three suppliers.
The expansion answers a recurring request from medical, industrial and consumer customers: stop sending me loose components and send me a keypad that works. The module approach shifts the alignment, lamination and testing risk to the supplier, where the tooling and process control already exist.
What the Module Line Does
The line performs the full keypad build in one flow:
- Molds or stocks silicone keypads with the required durometer, plunger length and key profile.
- Laser-marks legends, symbols and backlight diffusers on the key surface - no printed overlay to wear off, permanent legends that survive washing and solvents.
- Laminates the dome array to the FPC or PCB switch layer with the placement and registration control used across the array line.
- Aligns and bonds the silicone key over the array, with backlight windows positioned over LEDs on the switch layer.
- Tests the completed module: actuation force, contact resistance, and backlight uniformity per key.
The result is a keypad module that arrives at the customer ready to mount into the housing.
Laser Marking vs Printed Legends
Laser marking changes how legends behave over product life:
- Printed legends sit on the surface and wear with friction, cleaning agents and UV exposure.
- Laser marking changes the silicone surface itself, creating a permanent, color-stable mark that resists abrasion and common disinfectants.
- For backlit keys, the laser can create a translucent window in the silicone that diffuses LED light evenly - no separate light guide part needed.
Medical devices, lab instruments and industrial panels, where keypads get scrubbed daily, are the programs that pushed Shanyo to add laser marking to the line.
Backlight Integration
Backlight adds failure points when handled by three suppliers: the window in the silicone may not align with the LED, the diffuser may vary, and brightness can differ key to key. In the module line, alignment is set by tooling and verified by measurement:
- Backlight windows are positioned in the laser step, indexed to the array and switch-layer registration.
- Per-key brightness is measured on the test station; uniformity data ships with the module.
- LED options are reviewed at the design stage so the light source, window and diffuser match from the start.

Material and Force Matching
The module approach changes one important design consideration: the tactile feel is now a system property, not a dome property alone. The silicone durometer, plunger length and dome force combine into the final actuation feel. Shanyo tunes the combination:
- Silicone in 50-70 Shore A for most panels; higher durometer for keys needing a stiffer feel.
- Plunger length set so the key travel and dome snap happen in the right order.
- Dome force selected with the silicone stiffness factored in - the module feels like the design intended, not like a dome fighting a stiff key.
The test station verifies the assembled feel with force-curve measurement on the finished module, which is the number that matters to the end user.
Programs in Production
The expanded line is running modules for:
- Infusion pump and diagnostic keypads - laser-marked, backlit, cleanroom-compatible.
- Industrial handheld terminals - rugged silicone over heavy-duty domes, IP-sealed.
- Automotive aftermarket and accessory panels - backlit keys with automotive-grade arrays.
- Consumer remote and controller keypads - high-volume modules with consistent feel.
Documentation and Testing
Each module ships with the inspection data generated on the line: force-curve readings, contact resistance, backlight uniformity and the material certificates for the silicone, dome and adhesive lots. The documentation follows the same structure as Shanyo metal dome and array programs, so it fits existing quality workflows.
For design teams evaluating the module route, the silicone keypad design guide covers durometer and plunger selection, and the contact page reaches the engineering team for a module DFM review.
