When designing a membrane keypad, remote control, industrial panel or medical device, one of the most fundamental engineering decisions is choosing the actuation technology: a stamped stainless steel metal dome or a silicone rubber carbon pill. Both serve the same function - close an electrical contact when pressed - but they produce radically different feel, lifespan and cost. This guide, based on Shanyo's decade of manufacturing both technologies, helps you make the right choice.
1. How Each Technology Works
Metal Dome (Snap Dome)
A metal dome is a thin stainless steel disc (typically 0.05–0.15mm thick) stamped into a concave shape. At rest, it sits on the PCB contact pad with its edges contacting the outer ring. When pressed past a threshold force, the dome snaps through (inverts), and its center contacts the inner pad, closing the circuit. On release, elastic energy returns it to the original shape. The snap-through produces the characteristic "click."
Silicone Carbon Pill
A carbon pill is a conductive carbon-loaded silicone rubber nub molded onto the underside of a silicone keypad. When pressed, the pill collapses onto the PCB contacts. There is no snap-through event - the resistance changes gradually as the carbon makes contact. The tactile feedback comes entirely from the rubber's compression curve, not from a metal snap.
2. Side-by-Side Technical Comparison
| Criterion | Metal Dome | Silicone Carbon Pill |
|---|---|---|
| Tactile ratio | 40–70% (crisp click) | 0–15% (mushy, no click) |
| Life cycles | 100K–5,000,000 | 50K–500,000 |
| Actuation force range | 80–1000g+ | 100–500g (limited by rubber) |
| Contact resistance | 10–100 mΩ (metal-to-metal) | 100–500 Ω (carbon-to-pad) |
| Sealing / IP rating | IP65–IP67 (with membrane overlay) | IP67 inherent (silicone overmold) |
| Operating temperature | −40°C to +150°C | −40°C to +80°C |
| Cost per key (high vol.) | $0.05–0.20 | $0.02–0.10 |
| Noise | Audible click (5–8 kHz) | Nearly silent |
3. When to Choose Metal Domes
Choose metal domes when:
- The user needs audible and tactile confirmation - for example, TV remote controls, where the user presses without looking.
- The keypad must survive high cycle counts - POS terminals, industrial machinery and security keypads are pressed thousands of times per week.
- The application needs high-temperature resistance - under-hood automotive, oven controls or industrial ovens where silicone softens.
- You need low contact resistance for signal integrity, such as gaming controllers where latency matters.
- You want a thin profile - metal domes stack to 0.5–1.0mm total height, vs. 2–4mm for silicone keypads.
4. When to Choose Silicone Carbon Pills
Choose silicone carbon pills when:
- Silence is critical - medical devices in quiet wards, hotel room keypads, library equipment.
- The keypad must be cleanable and disinfected - silicone surfaces tolerate bleach and alcohol wipes better than membrane overlays over metal domes.
- Cost is the primary driver and cycle life is below 100K - toys, disposable medical devices, low-cost remote controls.
- The keypad needs integrated legends and sealing - a molded silicone keypad is a single piece, eliminating the overlay bonding step.
- The design benefits from colored, textured or illuminated keys - silicone can be molded in any color with backlight diffusers.
5. The Hybrid Approach: Metal Domes on Silicone Keypads
Many premium products combine both technologies. A silicone keypad with embedded metal domes underneath delivers the best of both worlds: the silicone provides sealing, color and easy cleaning, while the metal dome underneath provides the crisp click. This hybrid is common in high-end remote controls, medical infusion pumps and premium automotive steering wheel controls. Shanyo manufactures both metal domes and silicone keypads, and can supply hybrid assemblies.
6. Design Mistakes to Avoid
Mistake 1: Specifying metal domes for a silent room. A metal dome click in a hospital patient room is audible to other beds. Use silicone pills or add a silicone dampener over the dome.
Mistake 2: Specifying silicone pills for high-cycle use. A silicone pill that works fine for 50,000 presses in a TV remote will degrade by 200,000 presses in a POS terminal, becoming mushy and unreliable.
Mistake 3: Ignoring contact resistance. Carbon pills at 200Ω may work for simple on/off switches but cause signal errors in high-speed digital circuits. Use metal domes for any signal that must switch fast.
7. Shanyo: Both Technologies, One Source
Shanyo (Qingdao) Precision Electronics manufactures both stainless steel metal domes and custom silicone keypads under one roof. This means we can evaluate your application objectively - we will not push you toward the more expensive technology if the cheaper one meets the spec. Our standard catalog includes C-series round domes, individual domes, pre-assembled dome arrays and membrane switch assemblies. Send us your keypad requirements for a free sample and engineering recommendation within 48 hours.
