Why a Square Dome for VR Buttons

VR controllers put two unusual demands on a switch dome. First, the user presses rapidly and off-axis during fast game play - a round dome can rotate on its contact pad and develop an inconsistent feel. Second, the production line places hundreds of controllers a shift, and a round dome that picks-and-places slightly crooked is rework you cannot afford at consumer-electronics volumes. A square outline solves both problems: it keys into the PCB nest and cannot spin, so every button feels the same and every unit passes first-article inspection.

Shanyo's square VR domes are stamped from SUS301 half-hard stainless steel with a nickel or tin overcoat, and a carbon pill at the apex for a clean, low-resistance contact against the pad. We supply them loose on tape-and-reel for your SMT line, as individual parts for hand assembly, or pre-aligned on a dome sheet that drops straight into the controller housing.
